Choose one stop. Do not attempt both.
The official gap between Springfield's departure and Girard's arrival is 45 minutes. The normal drive is about 46 minutes before Springfield crowd release, walking, or parking. Treat these as separate plans.
The 8 a.m.–4 p.m. town-square event gives the family food, music, vendors, and a defined place to wait. Choose Springfield instead when minimizing travel is more important than event amenities.
Girard stage plan
- 09:15
- Arrive before the late-morning surge. Follow temporary event parking signs and park facing away from the railroad.
- 09:30
- Walk to Steam on the Square near 133 S. Second Street. Establish a family meeting point.
- 11:15
- Bathroom, water, sunscreen, and hearing-protection check. Do not wait until the train is visible.

- Move toward the Center Street public viewing area only as directed by event staff or law enforcement.
- 12:00
- Scheduled arrival. Keep children within arm's reach and remain at least 25 feet from every track.

- Scheduled departure. Let the first traffic wave clear; return to the square rather than rushing to the car.
Parking status: No verified official parking map or closure plan was publicly available during this review. Do not treat a business lot, field entrance, or shoulder as event parking unless it is signed or staffed.
Springfield stage plan
- 08:45
- Park east of the Third Street rail corridor. Do not plan on the station lot or Washington Street.
- 09:00
- Walk to the depot area, identify the staffed public viewing boundary, and choose a family meeting point away from the crossing.
- 10:15
- Be settled. Stop changing positions once sidewalks and crossings become dense.
- 10:45
- Scheduled arrival at the Amtrak Depot / Washington Street crossing.
- 11:15
- Scheduled departure. Wait 15–20 minutes before walking back through the crowd or entering traffic.
Known closures: Washington Street from Second to Fourth closes at 6 a.m. through roughly noon. Madison at Second, plus the Jefferson/Fourth crossing area, will close shortly before arrival and reopen after departure.
Parking approach: The Presidential Museum garage at Sixth and Madison is the first documented public option, open 7 a.m.–7 p.m. at published hourly rates. The 8th and Capitol municipal garage is the longer-walk fallback. Verify event-day signs before entering either facility. The Old State Capitol garage is not a daily-parking option in 2026.

Non-negotiable safety
Stay at least 25 feet from every track and obey the larger local setback if marked. Railroad tracks, equipment, yards, and right-of-way are private property. Expect movement on any track. Do not pace the train, stand in a road, block a crossing, or fly a drone near the event.
